The book is prepared by historians from Russia, Germany and Poland and dedicated to cultural, political, and symbolic aspects of gift exchange in Europe during the Middle Ages and early Modern time. Examining a series of specific episodes from the history of Western Europe, the Byzantine Empire and Russia, the authors reveal a wide range of gift exchange functions in different historical situations. Exchanging gifts was an important means of communication both in the Western and Eastern parts of Europe for the period under review. The participants of this joint international project demonstrate that the medieval "language of gifts" was rich of symbolism and was sophisticated enough for accurately expressing a variety of very different meanings.
