The paper carries out a comparison of two traditions, which influenced the creation of Columbanus’s image as a saint: the Eastern traditon of the desert fathers and the Western tradition of saints as powerful miracle-workers. Based on the analysis of the miracles described in the «Vita Columbani» it is argued that the final imaged created by the hagiographer differs from both of the fundamental archetypes and represents another type of sanctity, whereas it takes on a corporative rather than universal character and value.
