The article discusses the key event that led to the Rwandan genocide of 1994 — the assassination of Rwandan President Juvénal
Habyarimana. The author provides detailed reconstruction of the train of the events connected with the President's plane crash, and outlines its dominant interpretations, according to which the assassination was organized by Hutu extremists within Rwanda’s political elite or by Tutsi rebels (Paul Kagame and his Rwandan Patriotic Front). The author does, however, conclude that the responsibility for Habyarimana’s assassination can not be equated with the responsibility for the outbreak of the most intense of genocide in human
history.
