Cortisol (Crt) is a hormone that plays an important role in the stress response. The review considers the influence of nicotine (N) on Crt production. The data on Crt concentrations in smokers and non-smokers are presented. The influence of diurnal rhythms, body composition, age, and sex on N excretion and Crt production discussed. Special attention is paid to the influence of psychological and chemical factors of smoking on Crt production, as to Crt concentration changes in smoking cessation.
