The article is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of Elena Arkadyevna
Mamchur, one of the leading Russian philosophers and methodologists of science,
whose works have already become recognized classics of the Russian
philosophy of science. The author draws attention to the wide spectrum
of E.A. Mamchur’s research, covering the processes of formation and development
of scientific knowledge from scientific concepts of antiquity to modern
theories of gravity and quantum mechanics. Her interests primarily focus
on methodological principles, factors of the development of scientific knowledge,
issues of continuity in scientific research, and issues of the relationship between
science and culture. The article provides a brief biography of Elena
Arkadyevna, presents the main publications, and summarizes the most important
results of her research, such as the explication of the principle of simplicity, its
connection with the concepts of invariance and informativeness (1975, 1989),
the formulation of the principle of “maximum inheritance” (1984), and the mutual
influence between science and culture (1987). The author considers some
of the topics raised in the discussion on the subject of social epistemology
(2008) initiated by her critical articles on the problem of socio-cultural determination
of scientific knowledge. Among them are the questions about the “conditions
of possibility” and “historical events” and the possibility of their historical
and cultural reconstruction.
