In his attempt to describe the place of the Russian Empire in the Concert of Europe, the author follows Paul Schroeder who described Europe from the Vienna Congress to the Crimean War as the world of the Russo-British soft hegemony. Though the forces of nationalism born by the French Revolution could have destroyed the Concert of Europe, it suffered the decisive blow from the old aristocratic politics (though this politics used the new forces of public opinion). The Crimean War, the result of the tragic constellation of different crises and political blunders, destroyed the Russo-British "soft hegemony" and opened the door to a harsher world of the German domination and the precarious Biscmarck's network of alliances.
