Educational expectations can determine future career trajectories. Differences in expectations are not always determined by academic performance alone, but are also closely related to the family characteristics of students. The important role of family economic and cultural capital in shaping educational plans and career trajectories is well researched and evidenced. The focus of this paper is on a less studied aspect of this issue, namely the differentiation of educational expectations in the context of family social capital. The aim of the study is, firstly, to analyse the characteristics of Russian families’ social capital in the context of other (cultural and economic), and secondly, to illustrate the linkage between social capital, educational expectations and anticipated educational trajectories of Russian families. This analysis would be useful for educational researchers and a wide range of readers interested in students’ career expectations.
