This paper examines postcards as multimodal sources, combining visual and textual elements. It also highlights a third modality—postmarks and marks that represent both text and image.
Analysis of postcards reveals the diachronic dynamics of communicative formats, visual languages, and speech practices. The trinity of text, image, and postal metadata allows us to reconstruct not only what people communicated, but also how they did so. Studying postcards allows us to expand disciplinary boundaries: for linguistics, it offers a chance to see language inextricably linked to its visual context; for history, to hear the "living" voices of the era; and for cultural studies, to decode the mechanisms of formation and transmission of cultural codes.
