How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Estimating Dynamics of National Power: a Bayesian Principal Components Approach

P. 1–4.
Sedashov E., Vitaly Kabernik, Stukal D.

We offer a novel approach to the measurement of national power. The approach consists of two related parts: raw data processing and a measurement model. Suggested approach improves existing practices by allowing dynamic changes in the weights of national power components. It also returns credible intervals around point estimates, paving the way for statistical comparisons of national power values across time and space.

Updating legacy soil map reveals spatial soil-class probabilities
Gorbacheva A., Krenke A., Puzachenko M. et al., Geoderma Regional 2026 Vol. 46 Article e01124
Legacy soil maps remain essential for national land-use planning. However, their thematic accuracy and spatial resolution are often insufficient for contemporary applications requiring reliable estimates. This study presents a digital soil-mapping approach to update legacy soil information without extensive field sampling, demonstrated for arable lands in the Republic of Tatarstan (4.5 million ha). The proposed ...

Contribution of attentional mechanisms to verbal and nonverbal communication in boys with ASD
Minnigulova A., Dragoy O., Arutiunian V., European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2026
Communication deficits in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involve impairments in both verbal and nonverbal domains, potentially associated with altered brain network connectivity related to language, attention, and social cognition systems. This study investigated functional connectivity patterns among the Default Mode Network (DMN), Salience Network (SN), Dorsal Attention Network (DAN), and Language Network (LN) in male children ...

Forecasting the Birth Rate in Russia Based on Google Trends Search Query Statistics
Liliya А. Rodionova, Elena D. Kopnova, Kamalendinova S. et al., Population and Economics 2026 No. 10(2) P. 92–114
This article proposes an approach to forecasting fertility using Google Trends search query statistics. Unlike existing studies on fertility forecasting, this paper introduces a method for aggregating thematic search queries using machine learning techniques, reducing the dimensionality of search queries through principal component analysis, and incorporating a lag structure of search queries ranging from 1 ...

The article is devoted to clarifying the heuristic possibilities of the case-based approach (case study) in comparative political science. This approach correlates with ideographic knowledge within the framework of the division of epistemology into nomothetic (comprehension of patterns) and ideographic (descriptive) sciences (W. Windelband); with understanding knowledge within the framework of the distinction between explanatory ...

It is a common practice among social scientists to use “factor analysis” and “principal components analysis” interchangeably, even though PCA is not a factor extraction method, but a dimension reduction technique. Most of the recent studies with factor analysis rely solely on PCA or fail to specify which factor extraction method was used. Supposedly, it ...

Constraining governments: New indices of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal accountability
Lührmann A., Marquardt K., Mechkova V., American Political Science Review 2020 Vol. 114 No. 3 P. 811–820
Accountability—constraints on a government’s use of political power—is one of the cornerstones of good governance. However, conceptual stretching and a lack of reliable measures have limited cross-national research on this concept. To address this research gap, we use V-Dem data and innovative Bayesian methods to develop new indices of accountability and its subtypes: the extent ...
