Объективация болезни: феномен реификации в цифровой психиатрии
The article focuses on the phenomenon of reification in digital psychiatry. The author highlights that AI technologies exacerbate the problem of translating complex culturally-conditioned psychiatric constructs into formal mathematical structures, which creates an illusion of objectivity and impedes the development of personalized medical care. The main objective of the article is to minimize negative consequences associated with AI applications potentially harmful for individuals suffering from mental disorders. To achieve this goal, the study argues against the adverse effects of reification on understanding the nature of “disease” in psychiatry, fiduciary relationships between doctors and patients, and consequently, patient’s mental health. It demonstrates how standardization of individual patient experiences through simplified classification schemes leads to a loss of humanistic approach in diagnostic and therapeutic processes. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of critical reflection by psychiatrists regarding the limitations of AI tools, mandatory verification of analysis results’ reliability, particularly in cases involving rare clinical manifestations or specific sociodemographic living conditions of patients. The author concludes that successful use of AI is possible only under the condition of recognizing the constructive character of diagnostic categories and continuous monitoring by researchers and clinicians over decision-making quality provided by AI systems. An ethical framework for AI implementation should be based on a culture of critique and openness supported by collaborative efforts among experts across disciplines during regular ethical audits of implemented AI technologies.
