The internet's expansion into the creation and use of creative works leaves no doubt that current copyright and related rights legislation is losing its relevance. Regulatory acts adopted around the world aimed at protecting copyright in cyberspace, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in the United States, the European Union's Directive 2001/29/EC on the Harmonization of Certain Aspects of Copyright and Related Rights in the Information Society, the WIPO Copyright Treaty (WCT), the Performances and Phonograms Treaty (WPPT), and the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)1, planned for adoption at the G8 summit in 2009, represent attempts to preserve and adapt the existing legal framework to the new reality and address certain specific issues, leaving the resolution of fundamental issues for the future.
