Culture as collective resource allocation across life history trade-offs: Commentary on Baumard and André (2025)
Evolution and Human Behavior. 2025. Vol. 46. No. 6. Article 106748.
We discuss a naturalistic yet non-reductionist alternative to Baumard and André’s (2025) account. While their minimalist model helpfully situates culture within evolutionary ecology, it can downplay culture’s own organizing principles and historical dynamics. Building on Berry’s ecocultural perspective, we treat culture as a mediating and regulatory system shaped by ecological constraints yet operating through its own mechanisms of transmission, coordination, and change.
