Образы старения и сценарии собственной старости в представлениях людей среднего возраста
The article examines perceptions of aging and scenarios for the future of old age in the
minds of middle-aged people in contemporary Russia. Based on 22 in-depth interviews with
respondents aged 39–60, the study reveals how middle-aged people conceptualize old age, plan
for their old age, and what adaptation strategies they develop to overcome potential difficulties.
The results show that despite the prevalence of positive perceptions of aging, there is a
significant gap between the idealized image of «successful aging» and real concerns related to
physical limitations and social isolation. Informants demonstrate two main strategies: proactive
old age planning and passive waiting, which reflect their level of confidence in the future and
available resources. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding aging as a social
phenomenon that requires attention to the perceptions and practices of middle-aged people that
shape their identity and life strategies.
