In this paper we examine heterogenous individuals' occupational choice problem. The agents differ in their entrepreneurial talent and productivity and make their occupational choices by comparing their reservation wages to expected profits from running a firm. The model set-up delivers a cut-off function that describes a set of agents indifferent between the two occupations. This result allows for theoretical explanation of some recent empirical facts found by Poschke (2008).

We define a general equilibrium model with heterogeneous individuals who are endowed by identical preferences, given by utility function with constant elasticity of substitution (CES), and by heterogeneous entrepreneurial skills. We find that scale effects linked to migration are tractable in the framework of the constructed model because the migration changes the market size together ...

We develop a monopolistic-competition model of closed two-sector one-factor economy, where agents are (continuously) heterogeneous in their entrepreneurship abilities and choose between being employees or entrepreneurs. How the share of entrepreneurs in population changes when the market expands? The sufficient conditions in terms of variable elasticity of substitution are found for expanding or shrinking entrepreneurial ...

This paper studies how heterogeneous individuals, that differ by entrepreneurial skills
and productivity as a worker, endogenously choose their occupation (workers vs.
entrepreneurs) based on expected income comparison (wages vs. profits). Each entrepreneur runs a
firm that produces a single variety of a horizontally differentiated good under monopolistic
competition. We show that the cutoff for occupational selection between workers ...

Based on the well-known model of monopolistic competition by Melitz with a finite number of firms, we built a number of dynamic models, designed to clarify the dynamic behavior of the original construction. Two variants of the formal Melitz dynamic model are presented, with the quasi-steady state found in one of them. Also, the models ...

The level of self-employment among immigrants is often higher than among natives. The purpose of this paper was to test empirically whether selective migration with respect to entrepreneurial characteristics may explain this difference. The relevant hypotheses were tested comparing representative samples of Russian immigrants in Norway and their stay-at-home counterparts. Data from the Russian population ...

This study investigates the effect of a twofold rise in fixed payments on sole-proprietors and entrepreneurial activity in 2013 and a twofold decline in these payments in 2014. We present a general equilibrium model of monopolistic competition featuring pro-competitive effects and a competitive limit, and investigate the impact of trade on welfare and efficiency. Contrary to the constant elasticity case, in which all gains from trade are due to product diversity, our model allows for a welfare decomposition between gains from product diversity ...

Recent studies have substantially enhanced our understanding of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in entrepreneurship—articulating the theoretical relevance of ADHD-type traits in entrepreneurship and confirming the positive linkages between ADHD symptoms/diagnosis and entrepreneurial intentions and behavior. However, how and why some people with ADHD symptoms run successful ventures, while other entrepreneurs fail to perform ...

We develop a general equilibrium model of monopolistic competition with a traded and a nontraded sector. Using a broad class of homothetic preferences—that generate variable markups, display a simple behavior of their elasticity of substitution, and nest the ces as a limiting case— we show that trade liberalization: (i) reduces domestic markups and increases imported ...

We derive a simple necessary and sufficient condition on preferences for the market outcome to be socially optimal under monopolistic competition with input-output (IO) linkages. Preferences that satisfy this condition are typically non-CES and display pro-competitive effects, although they converge to the CES when IO linkages become negligibly weak. We show that the equilibrium with ...

We develop a two-factor, two-sector trade model of monopolistic competition with variable elasticity of substitution. The present paper extends the traditional Dixit and Stiglitz set-up by introducing consumers’ workers’ heterogeneity into a general equilibrium model of monopolistic competition. The model obtains a closed-form solution for a symmetric equilibrium and shows how the market outcome depends on the joint distribution of consumers’/workers’ taste and labor productivities. In contrast to the traditional ...

The paper aims to contribute to the discussion on “productive, unproductive, and destructive” entrepreneurship started by William Baumol.
