Факторы формирования и роль совместной идентичности в работе проектных команд
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the formation of shared identity among project team members and to understand the perceived role of shared identity in the functioning of a project team. The research method used was thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews. The sample (n=15) consisted of employees from Russian companies who were either currently involved or had recently completed work on a project team at the time of the study. As a result of the research, 11 factors influencing the formation of shared identity were identified: clear goals and objectives of the project, importance of the project for the entire organization, uniqueness of the project's goals and tasks, material benefits from participating in the project, personal interest in project, career opportunities, project outcomes are important for future work, regular meetings of the project team, visible results of the team's overall activity, visible results of each member’s activity, and personal sense of responsibility. Additionally, mixed attitudes towards the role of shared identity within teams were revealed. Some respondents noted that shared identity helped in their work, while others indicated that it could hinder team functioning or have no effect at all. The value of this research lies in the fact that previous studies on shared identity within project teams primarily focused on organizational perspectives. This study contributed by adding psychological aspects to the topic. Furthermore, we managed to detail existing and researched factors that influence shared identity and highlight new factors that did not fit into these classifications. Based on the findings, the following conclusions can be drawn:
- Shared identity within a project team has a specific basis for identification related to the task being addressed within the project. In addition to organizational factors, the perceived value of the project determines an individual’s identification with the team.
- The development of shared identity within the project team occurs through the ability to meet individual needs of its members, communication structure, project management processes, as well as characteristics of the task at hand.
- Due to the significance of the project task, the cognitive aspect of identity becomes more prominent than the affective component of identity.
