Family care is the preferred form of support for those in need. For the caregivers, however, this can have negative consequences - deterioration of health, loss of job, reduced income, lack of free time. In Russia, the problem is relevant due to the insufficient development of the social infrastructure of care. The purpose of this article is to assess the relationship between caregiving, employment and the income levels of caregivers in Russia. A special feature of the study is the use of data from a representative survey, “Selective monitoring of daily time use”, conducted by Rosstat in 2019. This allows us to assess the involvement of Russians in family care not only from respondents’ subjective assessment (broad estimation), based on the question about caring for relatives in need, but also from data in the daily time use diary (narrow estimation), in which respondents recorded their activities during the day, including caring for adult dependents, on a minute-by-minute basis. The relationship between family care and work activity is analyzed by means of three blocks of regression analysis: the impact of family care on employment; the impact of employment on care provision; the impact of family care on the household budget. To account for endogeneity at the first and second stages of the study, instrumental probit regressions are applied. The analysis allows us to identify the threshold duration of care provided, after which it becomes difficult for carers to continue working - more than 21 hours per week according to the narrow estimation, more than 14 hours per week according to the broad estimation. Providing care to relatives living outside the household increases the chances of maintaining employment and a more stable financial situation, while such a double burden limits the availability of personal time and the opportunity for rest, which may contribute to a deterioration in the quality of life of the caregivers.
