Искушение эпитафией КБН 114: Тихон - не тавр, но павший "в таврах"
The de visu study of the epitaph CIRB 114 allowed us to rehabilitate the original V.V. Latyshev’s reading of the dative case Ταύροισι on the rib of the stela – in the toponymic meaning. It was also possible to read at the top of its front side μνήμη – «monument», and below not only the name, but also the patronym of the deceased: Τύχωνος Ἴωνος, with his ethnicon not preserved further (due to the loss of the lower part of the stone). It turned out that on the reverse surface the text – Σήμα | τι τῶι δ’ | ὑπόκειτα[ι] | ἀνὴρ πολλ | [οῖσι ποϑεινός] – was arranged somewhat differently than previously imagined. As a result, it turned out that the decedent Tychon was an outstanding defender of Panticapaeum, who fell «in the Tauri» (Taurica), opposing, apparently, the Scythian aggression, in a situation that allows different interpretations of the circumstances of his death.
