How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

INTEREST (RATE): ОТКУДА “РАСТУТ НОГИ”?

Вестник Московского университета. Серия 6: Экономика. 2024. Т. 59. № 6. С. 62–77.
Grebnev L.

The work is an expanded version of the report at the conference "Economics, Society and Culture: the legacy of Adam Smith and Modernity". The subject of the work is interest (rate) ("loan interest"), to which Adam Smith paid a lot of attention. The purpose of the work is to substantiate the unrealistic assumption that the origin of interest (rate) is rooted in the behavior of individuals, and to propose an alternative version. The objectives of the work: (1) to consider the specifics of the space of interests of individuals on a specific example; (2) to argue the incompatibility of interest rate (loan interest) with the hyperbolic nature of intertemporal preferences at the level of individuals; (3) to put forward and substantiate the hypothesis of the connection of the interest rate with the long-term interest in the self-preservation of communities. The introduction substantiates the connection of the purpose of the work with the scientific heritage of Adam Smith. In the first section, the specifics of the space of interests of individuals are considered at the time of the introduction of seat belts. The second section compares the qualitative differences between exponential and hyperbolic discounting. The third section substantiates the possibility of a connection between the specifics of the interaction of primitive nomadic communities and the emergence of the phenomenon of interest rate. Main conclusions: (1) there are partially competing short-term interest in saving time and long-term interest in continuing life in the space of interests of individuals; (2) the incompatibility of interest rate with the hyperbolic nature of intertemporal preferences at the individual level is justified by qualitative differences in hyperbolic and exponential reduction of values of future time to the present, based on the use of interest rate (loan percent); (3) the basis of the hypothesis of the connection of interest rate with the long-term interest in the self-preservation of primitive communities is the specificity of the totemic form of social self-identification. The results obtained can be used in economics textbooks.

This study empirically tests the deposit channel hypothesis, which holds that increases in deposit markups cause liquidity outflows from the banking sector and a contraction in credit supply. The central question is whether deposit substitution effects, whereby depositors shift funds to other financial instruments during monetary tightening, are reflected in banks’ balance sheets and aggregate ...

Throughout life, individuals face various decisions, necessitating the development of optimal strategies to achieve desired outcomes. However, the mechanisms underlying intertemporal choice, the conflict between immediate and delayed rewards, remain a topic of debate. This pilot study focuses on analyzing impulsivity as a key factor in such decisions, examining it through the lens of personality ...

The fundamental problem faced by any person when making decisions related to food choices is finding a compromise between a product’s health benefits and its taste. Solving this problem depends on numerous factors; however, studies most often highlight the influence of four key variables: impulsivity, self-control level, health attitudes, and taste preferences.
