The article analyzes «The Routledge Companion to Gender and Affect» (2023), edited by Todd Reeser. The concept of affect is used here to explain the rise of right-wing populists in contemporary world, the active transformation of neoliberal hegemony, and the failure of leftist intellectuals that still dominate Anglo-American universities. It captures the changes in the modern public sphere, which is increasingly dependent on emotional and unreflected attitudes that determine the judgments of ever wider social groups. Unfortunately, the concept of affect only captures the problems of growing resentment, violence and avoidance of social reflection on the reasons for contemporary instability, but does not offer clear mechanisms for changing the existing state of affairs.
