At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Internal waves generated by explosive eruptions of underwater volcanoes and their effect on the sea surface

Natural Hazards. 2025. Vol. 121. No. 1. P. 661–675.
Talipova T., Pelinovsky E., Didenkulova E.

An analysis of internal waves arising in a two-layer fluid during an explosive eruption of an underwater volcano is performed. Processes occurring in the near zone are parameterized by the initial source in the form of a displacement of the water column, as proposed by Le Méhaute (Mehaute, Adv Hydrosci 7:1–79, 1971). Then the linear problem is solved, and the features of internal waves are determined depending on the ratio of layer thicknesses, source radius, and distance to the source. The calculated wave field has the form of frequency-modulated groups, where the leading group has the maximum amplitude. The wave of maximum height in this train arrives much later than the weak leading wave, which makes it possible to prepare for the approach of dangerous waves. Estimates of the horizontal speed of currents on the sea surface caused by internal waves have been carried out. It was shown that internal waves can cause noticeable variations in wind ripples detected by remote sensing.

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R., Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering 2026 Vol. 886 P. 249–255
Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular ...

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Shulman I., Lebedev A., Studies in Computational Intelligence 2026 Vol. 1265 P. 266–273
A discrete-time model is presented for the self-organization of the X/Twitter social network to the edge of a phase transition, characterized by avalanche-like propagation of information in the network. The model is based on the analogy between the critical dynamics of the X social network and sandpile cellular automata with Manna rule on the Chung-Lu ...

Неравновесное состояние в квазиодномерных сверхпроводящих каналах
Arutyunov K., Kharitonov I. A., Petrosyants K. O., JETP Letters 2026 Vol. 124 No. 6 P. 1–16
Superconducting properties of metallic micro- and nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors. Of particular interest is the nonequilibrium current-induced state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channel. The most interesting phenomenon here is the stepped I–V characteristic, explained by a process known as phase slip center activation. If the origin of such step-like ...

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 579 Article 150159
Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors; however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related descriptors. Three ML algorithms ...
