Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

The cost of emotion regulation: A study of electomyographic and cardiac markers

P. 35–38.
Vladimir Kosonogov, Ioannis Ntoumanis, Hajiyeva G., Olga Kuskova, Iiro Jaaskelainen

Our study aimed to examine the peripheral markers of emotion regulation while participants viewed oneminute negative videos, comparing them to the natural viewing of neutral and negative videos. We analyzed facial electromyography and cardiac activity during the suppression and reappraisal of emotions in response to negative videos, as well as during the simple viewing of neutral or negative videos. We found that corrugator activity was higher in all negative conditions. Additionally, suppression led to a reduction in negative emotions compared to the "watch" condition. Interestingly, the activation of the zygomaticus major muscle was higher during the neutral condition compared to all negative conditions. Surprisingly, this muscle was also less activated during suppression compared to the "watch" and "reappraise" conditions. In other words, participants not only suppressed their negative expressions but also their positive expressions. Finally, we observed a greater deceleration of heart rate during suppression compared to the neutral condition, which reflects the cost of emotion regulation. Our findings demonstrate that one-minute naturalistic videos are effective stimuli for studying emotion regulation.

Dorri Sedeh S., Kosonogov V., Kerimova N. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1710257
Introduction:  As cities continue to grow, access to natural environments is becoming more limited, contributing to increased stress levels in urban populations. Panoramic 360° videos provide a creative and scalable means of simulating natural environments, potentially reducing stress in city residents under controlled settings. Here, we examined whether short immersive experiences in different urban environments support ...

Emotion Regulation in Overeating Disorders: A Psychophysiological Study
Gerges M., Evgenyeva E., Isakova D. et al., American Journal of Health Behavior 2026 Vol. 50 No. 2 Article 2516
Objectives:  Maladaptive eating behaviors characterize overeating disorders and are often accompanied by emotion dysregulation. Physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated psychophysiological responses to food-related, aversive, and neutral stimuli under different emotion regulation strategies. Methods:  Sixty-four adults (75% female; mean age = 45.6 years) with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m² participated (50 with overeating disorder, 14 ...

The role of prefrontal cortex in emotion regulation: A more naturalistic magnetoencephalographic study
Medvedeva A., Nikita Rudenkiy, Danila Shelepenkov et al., Behavioural Brain Research 2026 Vol. 507 Article 116169
Emotion regulation is aimed to control emotional states through various strategies, among which reappraisal and suppression have been extensively studied up to date. Nevertheless, physiological correlates of this process are still debatable, since findings on both brain and peripheral activity are contradictory. In the present work, we were first to investigate neural sources and inter-subject ...

Biochemical Foundations of Emotion Regulation: Implications for Pharmacological and Psychological Interventions-A Narrative Review
Gerges M., Kosonogov V., OBM Neurobiology 2025 Vol. 9 No. 4 Article 310
Background: Emotional regulation (ER) involves processes that modulate the intensity, duration, and expression of emotions. Dysregulation in ER is closely linked to mental health disorders, highlighting the need to understand its biochemical foundations. While traditionally studied from psychological perspectives, ER is increasingly recognized as deeply intertwined with biochemical pathways. Objective: This review aims to explore ...

Рассказова М. А., Lyusin D., Психологические исследования: электронный научный журнал 2025 Т. 18 № 102 Статья 7
Emotional differentiation is an important characteristic of human emotions that reflects how well an individual can differentiate and describe their emotional states. It has been often suggested that high emotion differentiation is linked to more effective emotion regulation, but empirical results are controversial and provide a complex picture of associations between emotion differentiation and emotion ...

Interoceptive signals and emotional states shape temporal perception through heart rate modulation
Volodina M., Rusinova A., Terenteva K. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2025 Vol. 16 Article 1610347
This study investigated the relationships between interoceptive signals, emotions, and time perception, with a particular focus on the mediating role of heart rate (HR). Emotional video stimuli were used to elicit specific emotional responses, while participants’ attentional focus was manipulated (internal vs. external) to examine its influence on temporal judgments. Emotional content significantly influenced time perception. ...
