Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Scientists Propose Method for More Efficient Resource Use in Machine Learning
An international group of researchers, including mathematicians from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has provided a theoretical justification for a simple and computationally efficient method of estimating uncertainty in Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The paper has been published on the scientific preprint server arXiv.org and presented at AISTATS 2026.

Rapid shifts in social reality, increasing instability in the labour market, culture and socio-political field, highlight the necessity for individuals to be proactive towards their environment. The concept of agency is central in this context, reflecting the capacity for independent decision making and related behavior aimed at transformation or active support of the surrounding social ...

Developmental Changes in Presentation Rate Effect on Auditory Event-Related Potential through Childhood to Adulthood
Kostanian D. G., Rebreikina A. B., Sysoeva O.V., RUDN Journal of Psychology and Pedagogics 2024 Vol. 21 No. 1 P. 96–114
Abstract. In adults, the rate of stimuli presentation has been shown to play a critical role for the event related potentials (ERP): its components become larger as presentation rate decreases. But there are few works evaluating developmental changes of this ERP modulation that might provide insights into basic forms of learning. The current study aims ...

Electrophysiological Evidence of Dissociation Between Explicit Encoding and Fast Mapping of Novel Spoken Words
Shtyrov Y., Filippova M., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2021 Vol. 12 Article 571673
Existing behavioral, neuropsychological and functional neuroimaging data suggest that at least two major cognitive strategies are used for new word learning: fast mapping (FM) via context-dependent inference and explicit encoding (EE) via direct instruction. However, these distinctions remain debated at both behavioral and neurophysiological levels, not least due to confounds related to diverging experimental settings. Furthermore, the neural dynamics ...

Неспецифическое положительное воздействие транскраниальной электрической стимуляции постоянным током на усвоение новых слов
Филиппова М. Г., Перикова Е. И., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Журнал высшей нервной деятельности им. И.П. Павлова 2022 Т. 72 № 2 С. 227–232
This study aimed at systematically assessing the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on novel word learning. Using a sample of 288 healthy volunteers, we modulated tDCS stimulation regimes (anodal/cathodal/placebo), stimulated hemisphere (left/right), site (Broca/Wernicke/right-hemispheric Broca/Wernicke homologues), and assessed tDCS effects on different learning protocols: fast mapping vs. explicit encoding, with vs. without articulation. ...

Transcranial direct-current stimulation of core language areas facilitates novel word acquisition
Shtyrov Y., Perikova E., Filippova M. et al., Neurobiology of Learning and Memory 2024 Vol. 216 Article 107992
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that can alter the state of the stimulated brain area and thereby affect neurocognitive processes and resulting behavioural performance. Previous studies using tDCS to address the language function have shown disparate results, particularly with respect to language learning and word acquisition. To fill this gap, ...

Single-shot semantic mapping in the development brain: the role of articulation in novel word learning
Vasilyeva M. J., Artemenko E., Knazeva V. M. et al., , in: Proceedings of the 6th Saint Petersburg Winter Workshop on Experimental Studies of Speech and Language (Night Whites 2022).: Scifiya-print, 2023.
Young children are well-known as successful word learners, which is reflected in very high rates of new word-form acquisition and efficient mastering of the mother tongue or even several languages. This ultra-rapid lexical acquisition mechanism has been dubbed “fast mapping” [FM, Carey, Bartlett 1978]. Despite many studies conducted in this field, neural underpinnings of FM ...

Arsalidou M., Skuratov N., Khalezov E. et al., Plos One 2022 Vol. 17 No. 2 Article e0263106
A constant blood supply to the brain is required for mental function. Research with Doppler ultrasonography has important clinical value and burgeoning potential with machine learning applications in studies predicting gestational age and vascular aging. Critically, studies on ultrasound metrics in school-age children are sparse and no machine learning study to date has used color ...

This review presents the analysis of changes in the components of event-related potentials (ERPs) after visual and auditory perceptual learning in humans. The use of the EEG method, which has a high temporal resolution, makes it possible ...

Razorenova A., Скавронская В. В., Tyulenev N. B. et al., Современная зарубежная психология 2020 Т. 9 № 2 С. 46–56
A stable relation between words and referent objects or events underlies human language. One of the most fundamental questions is how brain processes new words in order to form new lexical items. The answer to such questions will bring significant breakthrough in multiple fields, ranging from methods of language teaching and speech correction programs for ...

Representing color and orientation ensembles: Can observers learn multiple feature distributions?
Kristjansson A., Journal of Vision 2019 Vol. 9 No. 9 P. 1–17
Objects have a variety of different features that can be represented as probability distributions. Recent findings show that in addition to mean and variance, the visual system can also encode the shape of feature distributions for features like color or orientation. In an odd-one-out search task we investigated observers' ability to encode two feature distributions ...

Charkhabi M., Халезов Е. А., Kotova T. et al., Plos One 2019 Vol. 14 No. 11 P. 1–13
School engagement reflects the degree to which students are invested, motivated and willing to participate in learning at their school and this relates to future academic and professional success. Although school engagement is a primary factor predicting educational dropout or successful school completion in Europe and North America, little is known about school engagement factors ...

Why parametric measures are important for understanding typical and atypical cognitive development
Arsalidou M., Im-Bolter N., Brain Imaging and Behavior 2017 Vol. 11 No. 4 P. 1214–1224
Children’s cognitive abilities improve significantly over childhood and adolescence. We know from behavioral research that core cognitive processes such as working memory and mental attention improve significantly across development. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for investigating the typically developing, living brain in action. In the last twenty years we have learned a great deal ...
