How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Rapid shifts in social reality, increasing instability in the labour market, culture and socio-political field, highlight the necessity for individuals to be proactive towards their environment. The concept of agency is central in this context, reflecting the capacity for independent decision making and related behavior aimed at transformation or active support of the surrounding social ...

Developmental Changes in Presentation Rate Effect on Auditory Event-Related Potential through Childhood to Adulthood
Kostanian D. G., Rebreikina A. B., Sysoeva O.V., RUDN Journal of Psychology and Pedagogics 2024 Vol. 21 No. 1 P. 96–114
Abstract. In adults, the rate of stimuli presentation has been shown to play a critical role for the event related potentials (ERP): its components become larger as presentation rate decreases. But there are few works evaluating developmental changes of this ERP modulation that might provide insights into basic forms of learning. The current study aims ...

Electrophysiological Evidence of Dissociation Between Explicit Encoding and Fast Mapping of Novel Spoken Words
Shtyrov Y., Filippova M., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2021 Vol. 12 Article 571673
Existing behavioral, neuropsychological and functional neuroimaging data suggest that at least two major cognitive strategies are used for new word learning: fast mapping (FM) via context-dependent inference and explicit encoding (EE) via direct instruction. However, these distinctions remain debated at both behavioral and neurophysiological levels, not least due to confounds related to diverging experimental settings. Furthermore, the neural dynamics ...

Неспецифическое положительное воздействие транскраниальной электрической стимуляции постоянным током на усвоение новых слов
Филиппова М. Г., Перикова Е. И., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Журнал высшей нервной деятельности им. И.П. Павлова 2022 Т. 72 № 2 С. 227–232
This study aimed at systematically assessing the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on novel word learning. Using a sample of 288 healthy volunteers, we modulated tDCS stimulation regimes (anodal/cathodal/placebo), stimulated hemisphere (left/right), site (Broca/Wernicke/right-hemispheric Broca/Wernicke homologues), and assessed tDCS effects on different learning protocols: fast mapping vs. explicit encoding, with vs. without articulation. ...

Перикова Е. И., Блинова Е. Н., Андрющенко Е. А. et al., Физиология человека 2023 Т. 49 № 3 С. 96–105
The primary motor cortex takes part in various stages of language learning accompanied by human motor activity. However, previous studies of causal relationships between the activation of primary motor cortex and efficiency of language tasks reveal contradictory results, likely due to diverging learning environments and specific movement patterns required by different experimental designs. The goal ...

Fast mapping vs. explicit encoding of novel vocabulary: similar efficiency, different mechanisms?
Perikova E., Filippova M., Gnedykh D. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2023 Vol. 20 No. 2 P. 370–385
Two language learning strategies have been described as common in both children and adults: fast mapping (FM), which promotes learning from context, and explicit encoding (EE), which is provided through direct instruction. Pre - vious functional neuroimaging studies in adult learners have suggested differential neural mechanisms underlying these two major cognitive strategies, with some limited ...

В статье представлен анализ записей родительского дневника о речевом развитии ребенка в условиях искусственного билингвизма в воз расте с одиннадцати месяцев до двух с половиной лет. Мать стремилась говорить с дочерью на русском и французском языках; со всеми остальными членами семьи общение осуществлялось только на русском языке. На при мере анализа развития фонетической системы и ...

Transcranial direct-current stimulation of core language areas facilitates novel word acquisition
Shtyrov Y., Perikova E., Filippova M. et al., Neurobiology of Learning and Memory 2024 Vol. 216 Article 107992
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that can alter the state of the stimulated brain area and thereby affect neurocognitive processes and resulting behavioural performance. Previous studies using tDCS to address the language function have shown disparate results, particularly with respect to language learning and word acquisition. To fill this gap, ...

Single-shot semantic mapping in the development brain: the role of articulation in novel word learning
Vasilyeva M. J., Artemenko E., Knazeva V. M. et al., , in: Proceedings of the 6th Saint Petersburg Winter Workshop on Experimental Studies of Speech and Language (Night Whites 2022).: Scifiya-print, 2023.
Young children are well-known as successful word learners, which is reflected in very high rates of new word-form acquisition and efficient mastering of the mother tongue or even several languages. This ultra-rapid lexical acquisition mechanism has been dubbed “fast mapping” [FM, Carey, Bartlett 1978]. Despite many studies conducted in this field, neural underpinnings of FM ...

A constant blood supply to the brain is required for mental function. Research with Doppler ultrasonography has important clinical value and burgeoning potential with machine learning applications in studies predicting gestational age and vascular aging. Critically, studies on ultrasound metrics in school-age children are sparse and no machine learning study to date has used color ...
