The imperial idea has deep roots in Russia. Since the XVI century, the Russian state as the "third Rome" and the direct heir of Byzantium expanded in three directions: to the West during defensive wars against the Poles, Swedes, French and Germans; to the South due to victories in offensive wars against the Turks with access to the Black Sea; and to the East as a result of colonial expansion against the descendants of the Mongols up to Alaska and Northern California. The driving force of the imperial policy was the geopolitical interests of the state which was conceived as surrounded by enemies; at the same time, Messianic Orthodoxy formed ideas about the Russian people as having divine support.
