This article analyzes the semantics of non-causative causativs in the Andean language from a titological point of view. These structures use a сausative marker without the expected increase in valence. Instead of syntax changes, the causativ introduces a semantic hue into the design. The typology describes that the semantics of non-causative causativs is always associated with an increase in the agentyness of the causoter. However, in Andi, non-causative causativas rather add to the design the focus on the
causer and, in the case of double causativ, the pragmatic separation of the two causative sub-events. According to this analysis, it is proposed to add this semantics to the semantic typology of non-causative causatives.

In this paper, I consider double causatives in Mehweb, a one village language spoken in Daghestan, Russia, and belonging to the Dargwa branch of East Caucasian. The capability of stacking two causative suffixes seems to be lexically restricted, and mapping onto verbal meanings that are typically P-labile in the languages of the family. Interestingly, the ...

The paper considers semantic structure of emotion causatives and their interaction with negation, namely, its narrow or wide scope. Emotion causatives are defined as a group of causatives with their specific semantic properties that distinguish them from other groups of causatives. One of those properties concerns their relation with corresponding decausatives, which, unlike causatives, do ...

This paper deals with the productive morphological causative r(ə)- in Abaza (Northwest Caucasian), a highly polysynthetic ergative language. We discuss the causativization process in Abaza as well as the semantic properties of the construction and elaborate an analysis of the event structure of the Abaza morphological causatives based on the scope of adverbials. ...

This paper investigates causative constructions in Mehweb, a lect of the Dargwa group of the East Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) language family. In Mehweb, it is possible to build a causative construction by using a causative predicate and the predicate of caused action. Originally such verbs conveyed the meaning of physical causation of motion and left the ...

The paper considers morphology, morphosyntax and semantics of causative formation in Agul, a Lezgic language of Southern Daghestan (Russia). In Agul, the two most frequent causative patterns, periphrastic and compound causatives, apparently share one source of grammaticalization. The former are combinations of ‘do’ with the infinitive of the lexical verb, while the latter put them ...

The paper concerns argument structure of causative verbs in Tundra Nenets and Forest Nenets. Special attention is paid to marking of the initial subject of a non-causative construction. Changing of syntactic status of predicate’s arguments in course of causativization meets expectations and conforms to B. Comrie’s generalization known as “paradigm case”. According to it, the ...

This paper concerns the uses of causative markers in Northern Samoyedic that do not have proper causative meanings. The secondary effects of causative morphology include applicativization, agentivization, unintentional causation and conversion. In the applicative meaning, a causative marker attaches only to intransitive verbs. Marking unintentional causation, the causative combines generally with ambitransitive verbs and converts ...

In this paper we examine the effects of valence in a continuous spatial voting model with two incumbent candidates and a potential entrant. All candidates are rank-motivated. We first consider the case where the low valence incumbent (LVC) and the entrant have zero valence, whereas the valence of the high valence incumbent (HVC) is positive. ...

Книга, предлагаемая вниманию читателя, посвящена лабильным глаголам – глаголам, которые могут использоваться и как переходные, и как непереходные. Как часто бывает в лингвистике, эта тема изучена и хорошо, и плохо одновременно. С одной стороны, лабильным глаголам посвящено множество прекрасных работ: работы А.А. Бокарёва (1941), а затем А.Е. The article discusses labile (also known as ambitransitive) verbs in literary
Arabic. I show that, though Arabic does not have a rich system of labile verbs,
some existing cases of lability (labile verbs of form III) are particularly interesting
from the typological point of view. Their unusual property is that the
opposition between semantically causative vs. non-causative uses (and ...

The paper examines the correlation between the degree of agentivity in Russian causatives and their semantic structure. It supports the view that the distinction between agentivity vs. non-agentivity in causatives is an important feature with various ramifications, as demonstrated in Comrie (1976), Talmy (2000), Shibatani (2001). It also motivates the role of the ‘control’ feature ...

An attractor, in complex systems theory, is any state that is more easily or more often entered or acquired than departed or lost; attractor states therefore accumulate more members than non-attractors, other things being equal. In the context of language evolution, linguistic attractors include sounds, forms, and grammatical structures that are prone to be selected ...

In the paper, the phenomenon of recursion in morphology of Adyghe, a polysynthetic language of Caucaus is considered. We argue that recursion may be allowed to different extents in different parts of the word and be highly constrained exactly in contexts that are considered prototypical for recursion. Hence this property is not as natural as ...

The present article examines the marker guža (гужа) in Andi, a language of the Avar-Andic branch of the Nakh-Daghestanian family. However, as I show with examples taken from Andi texts, ...
