Auf Winckelmann wird im Briefwechsel Katharinas II. mit Grimma sowohl im Hauptkorpus als auch im Anhang (Briefe J.F.Reiffensteins, des russischen Kaufagenten in Rom) Bezug genommen. Das zentrale Thema des Briefwechsels ist jedoch das Kopieren der Loggien Raffaels im Vatikan für Katharina II. von einer Gruppe deutscher Küntler, die sich als Winckelmanns Schüler und Nachfolger empfanden. Reiffenstein war derjenige, der dies organisierte. Dieses künstlerische Vorhaben verwandelte sich schrittweise in eine Representation des sog. "Griechischen Projekts" Katharinas, desse ideologische Metaphorik sich auf die Bilder der von Winckelmann entdeckten altgriechischen Antike stützte.
