Researchers Assess Student Performance in Mathematics, Physics, and Critical Thinking
A group of researchers representing four countries summed up the results of the Supertest, a large-scale study of the academic performance of engineering students in Russia, China, India, and the United States. It is the first study to track the progress of students in computer science and electrical engineering over the course of their studies with regard to their abilities in physics, mathematics, and critical thinking and compare the results among four countries. The article about study was published in Nature Human Behavior.

Children's Adaptation to Online Learning Depends on the Nature of Their Parents’ Work
Specialists at the HSE Institute of Education found that the willingness of children to work independently at home during distance learning depended not only on the availability of appropriate technical means in the family (its socio-economic profile), but also on the nature of their parents’ work (a socio-psychological factor).

Father’s Level of Education Affects Students’ Plans for Doctoral Studies
Saule Bekova, Research Fellow at the Centre of Sociology of Higher Education, and Ivan Smirnov, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Computational Social Sciences, studied how father’s level of education affects students’ plans to receive a doctoral degree. The article Determinants of doctoral degree aspirations: insights from a nationally representative panel study was published in HERB: Higher Education in Russia and Beyond journal.

When high growth is not enough: Rethinking Russia’s pre-crisis economic performance

Based on newly available data, we argue that multifactor productivity increases over the period 1995–2008 generated only about a half of Russia’s GDP growth, a smaller increase than most previous estimates. Further, growth in multifactor productivity seems to have contributed to a smaller share of GDP growth in 2003–2008 than in the first seven years of our observation period. These results imply that increases in capital inputs, and consequently investments in fixed capital, are more important than previously thought for Russia’s economic growth. Detailed analysis of industry-level data reveals two drivers of economic growth in the period: the extended oil & gas sector and high-skill-intensive services. Our analysis indicates that growth in the extended oil & gas sector reflected increased capital inputs, while growth in high-skill-intensive services seems to be part of catching up with more advanced markets. Neither sector is likely to spur growth in the coming decade.

A fixed assets stock correction model, which is based on the assumption of constant service lives during the term of 19612001 in Russia, is offered in the present paper. The model is supposed to eliminate huge distortions of the official fixed assets stock values, induced by capital revaluations of 19921997. The model also catches a virtual capital retirement effect due to lack of demand on the output produced with the capital. Using the modeled fixed assets and official employment data the total factor productivity (TFP) values have been obtained. Within the assumptions of the model it was found, that the relative impact of factors and TFP on economic growth is changed after the planmarket economy transition in 1991. If before 1991 the economic growth rate in Russia could be main ly explained by the rate of factors, since 1991 a share of TFP in the growth rate has been prevailing. It corresponds to the TFP share dominance in the growth rate of a number of devel oped countries.

In this work is presented a new approach to the designing of intelligent systems of the control of the shareholder value for the vertical-integrated Financial Corporation (VIFK). Developed system based on using of system-dynamics methods for the simulation of the synergic interaction between different business directions of VIFK for the target of shareholder value maximization. Note, the described system has been successfully introduced in biggest Russian banking groups and it is used for the preparing of strategic decisions.
