Adam Thorpe, a British poet, novelist and playwright, made his debut as a prose writer in 1992 with “Ulverton” – a complicated, but highly imaginative and impressive novel, which proved to be such a success that almost doomed the rest of the author’s works to fall into oblivion, which can’t be deemed fair. Besides, “Ulverton” is good for professionals and may be found too packed with tricky vocabulary and dialects by Russian students, studying English as a first and sometimes second foreign language. But they should not be deprived the pleasure to investigate Adam Thorpe’s worlds, and here his short stories may be of great help. They are likely to provide Russian students with the insights into modern English prose as well as some information concerning the processes of everyday life.
