Реакция южнокорейского общественного мнения на японское направление политики администрации Юн Согёля и динамика восприятия Японии в Республике Корея
The purpose of this article is to determine to what extent the public opinion in the Republic of Korea (ROK, South Korea) supports the Japanese course of President Yoon Suk-yeol and how receptive it is to the image of Japan transmitted by the official discourse. The article analyzes surveys of the South Korean public opinion, firstly, regarding the attitude towards the foreign policy course pursued by the current administration towards Tokyo, and secondly, regarding the dynamics of South Koreans’ perception of Japan. An analysis of the ROK’s public opinion regarding the Yoon Suk-yeol’s Japanese policy indicates that the majority of South Koreans are skeptical about Yoon Suk-yeol’s “future-oriented” approach to building relations with Japan, and expect more active mutual actions from Japan. The perception of Japan by public opinion in the ROK is prone to volatility – it depends on the position of the administration in power, the international situation and events taking place on the bilateral track, but this volatility tends to be within certain limits. The limiting factors of the current administration's policy towards Japan are the negative perceptions of Japan deeply rooted in the minds of the majority of the ROK’s population as well as the struggle of ideas within the ruling elite and the transmitting of opposing perceptions of Japan by main political groups. One of the main drivers of South Korea – Japan relations is the attitude of South Koreans towards the United States, the ROK-US alliance and their perception of the international situation as a whole.
