The study of the figure of the military commander in the Middle Ages presents a complex and comprehensive problem. One of the aspects of this problem is the question of the ruler’s personal participation in the battle. The paper is devoted to the consideration of this issue in the works of the French writer Christine de Pizan (1364 – c. 1430). Traditionally, scholars believe that in late medieval France the image of a warrior-prince involved in campaigns and battles prevailed. Christine de Pizan’s idea of a “non-fighting” sovereign is traced on the material of the “Le livre de faiz d’armes et de chevallerie” (1410) and other treatises. The article explores the ways of formation of this image, the correlation of the writer’s point of view with previous ideas and contemporary cultural tradition, the influence of these ideas on the development of military affairs and on the formation of a new image of the ruler
