Три битвы герцога Бургундского: поведение Жана Бесстрашного на поле боя
The article is devoted to the study of medieval military leadership on the example of one of the most famous commanders of the late Middle Ages – John the Fearless. The study focuses on the changing behavior of the duke on the battlefield. To study John’s behavioral patterns, we use modern reconstructions of battles in which the duke took part, literary works that the ruler could read, texts by the duke himself, and information about the cultural attitudes of chivalry in the late Middle Ages.An analysis of the above material allows us to come to the following conclusions: a military leader could enter the battle from the first minutes of the battle like other warriors. Another model of behavior implied that the commander would not initially personally participate in the battle, being at the head of the main (central) detachment of the army. Following different patterns of behavior depended on the characteristics of the military campaign and the objectives of the opposing sides in the battle, on the status and personal experience of the commander and on the nature of the command of the army – united or individual.
