The article is devoted to the aspect of the views of Sergei Nikolayevich Glinka — a well known social and political figure, publisher and publicist, representative of the conservative thought of the first quarter of the 19th century — which had not previously been studied in domestic and foreign historiography, and especially to his views on the “Eastern Question” in Russia’s foreign policy. Glinka’s views are examined in the context of the general history and comprehension of this problem. He reproduced the traditional thesis about Russia as the patroness and guardian of the interests of Orthodox and Slavic peoples under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and defended the need for their liberation and further geopolitical 118 Русско-Византийский вестник № 1, 2018 orientation toward the Russian Empire. Priority in the process of rapprochement of these peoples became a factor not of an ethnic, but of a religious community. The questions raised by S. N. Glinka were analyzed by conservative thinkers of later epochs, such as M. P. Pogodin, M. N. Katkov, N. Ya. Danilevsky, K. N. Leontiev.
