The paper presents the results of the analysis of the impact of major sports events on the development of the national economy of the Russian Federation. The relevance of the study is due to the large number of various mass sports events held in the regions of the Russian Federation, which had different impacts on the further development of the destinations. Within the framework of the article, the features of the formation and holding of large sports events are considered. The direct and indirect incomes that are acquired from holding major sports events are analyzed. Other aspects of the impact of mass sports events on the development of the state economy through territorial branding and the social sphere have been established. The paper also analyzes the reasons that prevent obtaining the maximum positive effects from the organization and holding of large sports events for the development of the national economy and the economy of Russian regions.
