This paper aims to introduce an analytical review of major factors contributing to the increase in the number of discrepancies in export and import statistics. By providing empirical evidence with a specific focus on Southeast Asia, the study demonstrates that a particular factor's influence isn't equal even for countries of the same region and that it can change over time. Systematization of the survey results is presented as a typology of major causes that lead to asymmetries in international merchandise trade statistics.
