The article examines the contribution of A. V. Startsev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, to the study of the Biysk merchant A. D. Vasenev, a prominent figure in Russian-Mongolian and Russian-Chinese trade in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also considers the role of this research in shaping Startsev’s scholarly interests. The article identifies the main stages of his work on Russian-Asian economic interaction, with particular attention to its archaeographic and source-study dimensions, as well as to Startsev’s methodological innovation in using biography to analyze socio-economic history, trade institutions, and international and intercivilizational contacts.
