The multivalued category "yu" (遊), which is quite common in the chronicle of the "Samguk sagi" in the context of the activities of the Khvaranov Institute, is quite difficult to translate. We analyzed all the cases of using this category in the text of the "Samguk saga" and divided the resulting array into semantic groups, taking into account the context, highlighting the common and special in these groups, based on the use of this category in Confucius and Chuang Tzu, as well as the concepts of the game by Joseph Huizinga. The variants of the Russian translation were compared with translations into English and Korean. The result of the analysis allowed us to suggest the most suitable options for translating this term and clarify the role and meaning of the occupations designated by the category 遊 for the Khwarans and for the culture of medieval Korea as a whole.
