'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Structure–Activity Relationships and Transcriptomic Analysis of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitors

Antioxidants. 2022. Vol. 11. No. 2. Article 220.
Poloznikov A., Nikulin S., Hushpulian D., Khristichenko A., Osipyants A., Asachenko A., Shurupova O., Savin S., Lee S., Gaisina I., Thatcher G. ., Narciso A., Chang E., Kazakov S., Krucher N., Tishkov V., Thomas B., Gazaryan I. G.

To evaluate the differences in action of commercially available 2-oxoglutarate mimetics and “branched-tail” oxyquinoline inhibitors of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF PHD), the inhibitors’ IC50 values in the activation of HIF1 ODD-luciferase reporter were selected for comparative transcriptomics. Structure–activity relationship and computer modeling for the oxyquinoline series of inhibitors led to the identification of novel inhibitors, which were an order of magnitude more active in the reporter assay than roxadustat and vadadustat. Unexpectedly, 2-methyl-substitution in the oxyquinoline core of the best HIF PHD inhibitor was found to be active in the reporter assay and almost equally effective in the pretreatment paradigm of the oxygen-glucose deprivation in vitro model. Comparative transcriptomic analysis of the signaling pathways induced by HIF PHD inhibitors showed high potency of the two novel oxyquinoline inhibitors (#4896-3249 and #5704-0720) at 2 μM concentrations matching the effect of 30 μM roxadustat and 500 μM dimethyl oxalyl glycine in inducing HIF1 and HIF2-linked pathways. The two oxyquinoline inhibitors exerted the same activation of HIF-triggered glycolytic pathways but opposite effects on signaling pathways linked to alternative substrates of HIF PHD 1 and 3, such as p53, NF-κB, and ATF4. This finding can be interpreted as the specificity of the 2-methyl-substitute variant for HIF PHD2.

New dichloro-chlorobismuthate supramolecular hybrid, (Me3NH)2{[BiCl5](Cl2)}, has been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry as well as Raman spectroscopy. The self-assembly of 2D dihalogen-halometalate architecture succeeds via Cl⋯Cl halogen bonds (3.066 and 3.543 Å). These features were assessed with DFT calculations and Interaction region indicator analysis. ...

Molecular mechanisms regulating differential expression of individual miRNAs within polycistronic clusters
Maltseva D., Tonevitsky A., Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences 2026 Vol. 13 P. 1–28
MicroRNA (miRNA) genes are frequently located in close proximity within the genome, forming so-called clusters. These clusters are transcribed as polycistronic units, suggesting coordinated transcriptional regulation of the miRNAs they contain. However, individual mature miRNAs from the same cluster often accumulate at varying levels and exhibit distinct tissue-specific expression patterns, indicating the presence of regulatory ...

Karina V. Klycheva, Mariia O. Silkina, Dmitry M. Hushpulian et al., Biochemistry. Biokhimiia 2026 Vol. 91 P. 1842–1858
Involvement of the transcription factor Bach1 in various scenarios of cellular regulation is reviewed herein. To date, the most extensively studied role of Bach1 is that of a repressor of the antioxidant genetic program initiated by the Nrf2 factor. This program counteracts oxidative stress, which triggers both ferroptosis and the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. Bach1 functions unrelated ...

Large amyloid plaques associate with early behavioral alterations in 6-month-old APPswe/PS1dE9 mice
Sitdikova K., Tsoy A., Chaprov K. et al., Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology 2026 Article nlag078
Understanding the earliest pathological changes in Alzheimer disease (AD) is critical for improving early intervention strategies. However, the relationship between amyloid plaque characteristics and early behavioral and molecular alterations remains unclear. We used 6-month-old female APPswe/PS1dE9 mice, a model of early amyloid-dominant pathology, to assess cognition and emotionality across a battery of behavioral tests. Amyloid ...

We derive the local pressure tensor generated by the original Rosenfeld fundamental measure theory (FMT) for hard-sphere fluids from an arbitrary infinitesimal deformation. The variation of a finite-distance FMT kernel is written via the line integrals of the local deformation gradient along the straight segment connecting its end points. The resulting symmetric pressure tensor consists ...

Conformational space of polyphenylenevinylene oligomers is systematically investigated computationally at energies relevant for room temperature dynamics in a solvent and in a solid state. Our calculations show that optimal oligomer structures are essentially planar. However, lack of a deep minimum at the planar geometry allows for large molecular deformations even at very low temperatures. At ...

Minor modification of fullerenes derivatives can change their biological effects and antioxidant properties. A plethora of water-soluble derivatives can be synthesised based on buckminsterfullerenes. In the present study, we synthesised three water-soluble C70 fullerene derivatives ...
