The article considers the lessons learned and outcomes of the Russian federal center interacting with the regions in dealing with global threats (through the lens of combating the coronavirus pandemic). It reveals the specifics of Russia that set it apart from a few other states in the fight against COVID-19 and reviews negative as well as favorable factors and conditions. We also highlight regional peculiarities of the pandemic’s economic impacts. The case study of Novosibirsk Oblast shows that the coronavirus crisis does not only bring losses and threats but also opens up new opportunities, particularly in launching new technologies and industries
