The article analyzes the role and place of the European Union in the development of centrifugal tendencies in Spain. The first part of the paper presents the methodology of the research. The second part assesses the effects of European integration on relations between the center and regions. The third part depicts the results of a series of interviews conducted by the author as part of the field research from October 2021 to January 2022. Based on the results of the interview, the author concludes that among the representatives of the academic community of Spain there is a general view of a limited influence of the European Union on the centrifugal tendencies in Spain. Despite the positive influence of the EU Regional policy on the socio-economic development of the regions of Spain, the degree of political influence on centrifugal tendencies is limited. At the same time, states, not regions, remain the key actors in the decision-making process within the European vector of Spain’s foreign policy. The scientific significance of the paper lies in the synthesis of the results of the series of interviews about the influence of the European Union on centrifugal tendencies in Spain. The material collected in this field study is being researched in this context for the first time.
