The article examines the situation in the multi-ethnic republics of Russia in the early 1990s. The Declaration on state sovereignty of the RSFSR, which had been adopted on June 12, 1990, became the catalyst for the «parade of sovereignty» that has already rolled through the territory of Russia. Following a similar example, at the "Union" level, Autonomous republics, regions and districts of Russia began to declare their independence. However, the disintegration processes in Russia did not end there – the sovereignization of individual peoples living in the multi-ethnic republics of Russia began. The current situation in Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Chechen-Ingushetia is considered. The peak of the process of sovereignization of peoples in these republics occurred in 1992. By the end of that year, almost all of Russia's multi-ethnic republics, except for ChechenIngushetia, were able to maintain their unity and begin the process of becoming part of a new Federal Russian state.
