Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

Implicit processing during change blindness revealed with mouse-contingent and gaze-contingent displays.

Attention, Perception and Psychophysics. 2018. Vol. 80. P. 844–859.
Kristjansson A., MacInnes W., Chetverikov A., Kuvaldina M., Jóhannesson Ó.

People often miss salient events that occur right in front of them. This phenomenon, known as change blindness, reveals the limits of visual awareness. Here, we investigate the role of implicit processing in change blindness using an approach that allows partial dissociation of covert and overt attention. Traditional gaze-contingent paradigms adapt the display in real time according to current gaze position. We compare such a paradigm with a newly designed mouse-contingent paradigm where the visual display changes according to the real-time location of a user-controlled mouse cursor, effectively allowing comparison of change detection with mainly overt attention (gaze-contingent display; Experiment 2) and untethered overt and covert attention (mouse-contingent display; Experiment 1). We investigate implicit indices of target detection during change blindness in eye movement and behavioral data, and test whether affective devaluation of unnoticed targets may contribute to change blindness. The results show that unnoticed targets are processed implicitly, but that the processing is shallower than if the target is consciously detected. Additionally, the partial untethering of covert attention with the mouse-contingent display changes the pattern of search and leads to faster detection of the changing target. Finally, although it remains possible that the deployment of covert attention is linked to implicit processing, the results fall short of establishing a direct connection.

Men and women are from the same planet Gender similarities in perspective-taking abilities
Imbault C., Slioussar N., Ivanenko A. et al., The Mental Lexicon 2026 P. 1–23
The study examines emotional responses to words representing a wide range of psychological valence and focuses on gender-related differences. We aimed to find out whether men and women differ in their emotional responses, and whether they can take the perspective of another gender. We used the slider paradigm (Warriner et al., 2017): participants saw a humanoid ...

Selflessness predicts pro-environmental behavior via unity with nature
Sautkina E., Bonnefoy B., Osin E., Journal of Environmental Psychology 2026 Vol. 113 No. August 2026 Article 103124
Several theories suggest that individual differences in the notion of the self are associated with relationship to nature and pro-environmental behavior. However, the diversity of existing theories makes it difficult to test this hypothesis in a comprehensive way. We combined a wide range of relevant constructs to explore whether self-centeredness (operationalized as a combination of ...

Digitalization and the widespread use of the Internet have changed the way people interact with information. The Internet and digital devices are becoming a kind of “external memory storage,” functioning as a form of transactive memory: instead of relying on their own cognitive resources, people increasingly trust search engines and cloud services. In this regard, ...

Automatic detection of dyslexia based on eye movements during reading in Russian
Laurinavichyute A., Lopukhina A., Reich D., , in: Proceedings of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational LinguisticsVol. 2: Short papers.: Wien: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2025. P. 59–66.
Dyslexia, a common learning disability, requires an early diagnosis. However, current screening tests are very time- and resourceconsuming. We present an LSTM that aims to automatically classify dyslexia based on eye movements recorded during natural reading combined with basic demographic information and linguistic features. The proposed model reaches an AUC of 0.93 and outperforms the ...

The effects of emotional distraction might differ depending on the valence and arousal of induced affective states. Understanding how artificial intelligence models make decisions is important, especially for difficult tasks like detecting deepfakes, where it's not enough to just get a result – it needs to know why the model made that choice. In the blink of an eye: behavioural correlates of the confirmation bias effect
Elena Artemenko, Anastasiia Zhitkova, Maksim Terpilowsky, Cognitive Processing 2025 No. 26 P. 567–575
The confirmation bias effect—a well-documented cognitive bias in decision-making—is widely discussed in the literature. It refers to the tendency for information to be perceived as more credible when it aligns with personal beliefs, and less credible when it does not. Several studies have demonstrated that confirmation bias is associated with an increase in cognitive load, ...

The purpose of this research was to investigate the cognitive mechanisms underlying the ability to read musical notations. Reading musical notations requires efficient integration of auditory and visual stimuli. Such integration is likely to be provided by means of functional connectivity between different brain regions. Furthermore, it should require maintaining a certain level of continuous ...

Writing direction influences the spatial representations of past- and future-tense forms: Evidence from eye tracking
Chrabaszcz A., Laurinavichyute A., Ladinskaya N. et al., Memory and Cognition 2025 Vol. 53 P. 1079–1094
The present study tests the hypothesis that the directionality of reading habits (left-to-right or right-to-left) impacts indi- viduals’ representation of nonspatial events. Using the blank screen paradigm, we examine whether eye movements reflect culture-specific spatial biases in processing temporal information, specifically, grammatical tense in Russian and Hebrew.
