Раздирающий душу вопль: спор А.И. Герцена и Б.Н. Чичерина о роли эмоций в политике
The article examines the debates between A.I. Herzen and B.N. Chicherin in the newspaper “Kolokol” in 1858-1859. It's shown that role of emotions in politics was the main subject of the controversy. Analysis of various arguments demonstrates that A.I. Herzen was a proponent of sincere expression of emotions in politics and journalism, whereas B.N. Chicherin advocated rationalization of the political sphere for the sake of prevention of unrests and revolutions. It is argued that the controversy had a certain impact on attitude of Russian socialists and liberals towards emotions.
A.Herzen as a scholar of contemporary history: Polish aspects. Herzen considered the Polish national movement as the main ally of Russian revolutionaries in their struggle against autocracy and highly appreciated the Poles' sacrifice. However the moderate nature of Polish social doctrine and demands to restore the former eastern border of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth caused Herzen's critical evaluations. The Polish partners of Herzen were not ready to share all of his ideas. Differences of the programs complicated Russian-Polish revolutionary cooperation. Analyzing the Russian-Polish relations of the last three decades, Herzen proposed his own vision of the Russian Empire's contemporary history.
In the world philology the discussion on identity of the prototype of Stavrogin, the primary character of “Demons” by А. Dostoevsky. This character is the key one for Dostoevsky’s views on Russian revolutionary radicalism. The author of the article finds a number of correspondences in the life and activities of A. Herzen and the novel’s character. Dostoevsky himself scattered numerous hints in the novel about its hero prototype.
Material objects must always be seen in context with the humans who created and used them. It is only possible to recognize and evaluate material culture in connection with human thought and behavior. The material world depends on the immaterial one, and vice versa. Neither sphere can exist without the other. In historical research, however, such contexts have not been considered regularly. In particular, the inter-connections between emotions and material culture have not been taken sufficiently into account in research. This was the reason for the “Institut für Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit” to organize a round-table-discussion on "Emotions and Material Culture“ and to publish its proceedings. The volume contains eleven contributions by specialists from eight countries. They show various possibilities to contextualize the material world and emotional behavior. They may be seen as a first step towards a “material emotionology” of the past. The complex results are intended to serve as a further impetus towards the systematic and comparative research into “emotional communities” and their material life in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
