Time reference in Indo-European languages is marked on the verb. With tensed verb forms, the speaker can refer to the past (wrote, has written), present (writes, is writing) or future (will write). Reference to the past through verb morphology has been shown to be particularly vulnerable in agrammatic aphasia (Bastiaanse, 2008; Yarbay Duman & Bastiaanse, ...

Reference to a time frame in which an event takes place can be done by verb inflection. If the time frame (past, present, future) is set by a temporal adverb, the verb inflection should correspond (yesterday he walk. ed; today he walk. s). Temporal violations by simple verbs (single, lexical verbs inflected with tense) in ...

Cross-linguistic data suggest that the grammatical categories of tense and aspect are not generally impaired in individuals with aphasia (see Bastiaanse et al., 2011 for a review). Rather, and more specifically, verb forms expressing reference to the past or conveying perfective semantics are more impaired than verb forms expressing reference to the non-past (present or future) or conveying ...

A core issue in neurolinguistic research is to what extent the language problems that people with aphasia suffer from are specific for their brain damage. Possibly, the processes that require more cognitive resources for the healthy brain are vulnerable in aphasia. A way to tap into unimpaired language processing is to employ event-related potentials (ERPs). ...

Background: Agrammatic speakers have problems with grammatical encoding and decoding. However, not all syntactic processes are equally problematic: present time reference, who questions, and reflexives can be processed by narrow syntax alone and are relatively spared compared to past time reference, which questions, and personal pronouns, respectively. The latter need additional access to discourse and ...

The article suggests a genre model for novel-myth which can be discerned in «The God of Small Things» by Arundhati Roy. The author argues against devising the model solely on the basis of parallels between the content of the novel and mythological images and motifs. Instead such mythomodeling categories as time, recollection and reader are ...

This paper explores cross-linguistic variation in the way speech event participants are mapped to person values, focusing on the encoding of person in reported discourse. It surveys several types of PERSON ALIGNMENT, or language-specific correspondences between participant discourse roles and person values, and shows that some of the types result in the deictic organization of ...

While space-time metaphor is a source of regular prepositional and adverbial polysemy in many languages, spatial deictic words develop temporal meanings much more rarely. However, space-time metaphor in deixis is not as exotic as it might seem, as demonstrated by the Russian spatial proximity marker tut ‘here,’ which develops a meaning of temporal proximity. Its ...

The paper focuses on the paths of grammaticalization of the verb of speech manaš (‘say’, ‘name’) in Eastern Mari. The converb of this verb (manən) is desemantisized, it loses the syntactic properties of the verb of speech and shifts to the category of subordinators. Successive grammaticalization steps of this marker can be observed in Modern ...

Human communication is basically the exchange of information. How can this be realized? Each communicant proceeds from a subjective perception of an objective reality; however in order to exchange information relating to this reality communicants are obliged to coordinate their perceptions. Each of us entertains personal experiences based on individual impressions and associations. But communication ...

This paper considers temporal meanings of Russian spatial adverbs and adjectives. We demonstrate the asymmetry between the temporal meanings of proximal and distal spatial words and analyze its semantic sources. One of the main manifestations of this asymmetry is the preferred future reference in the words denoting closeness (cf. blizkie kanikult ‘close vacations’ = ‘holidays ...

According to the widely spread opinion among historians of philosophy, Plato makes a philosophical conceptualization of word αἰών, using it in the sense of “eternity” and implying infinity and timelessness.
