The article considers the role and the use of media language in developing communicative competence at the institutions of higher education in terms of the requirements of international language testing systems.
This collective monograph, written by well-known Russian linguists, tpresents a broad picture of the way the language of mass media functions. The book gives a multifaceted analysis of how politics influences the language of mass media. This is a core problem of the mass media language, as politics represents the main content in mass media. The issue is treated in a semiotic, functional-stylistic, ethical and rhetoric aspects. The monograph examines in detail the language of print and electronic media (newspapers, magazines, television, radio). The language of foreign mass media is analyzed in a comparative aspect. The monograph shows the contemporary state of the mass media language and its influence on development of the literary language.
The monograph would be useful to students, PhD students and lecturers at journalism departments and schools of language studies, as well as to a wide range of readers, who are eager to preserve the purity and expressiveness of the Russian language.
This article discusses the main factors of media image of the North Caucasus. The object of study is considered in the following three categories: the specificity of the region relative to its position in the Russian Federation, the historical and cultural factors of the formation of the image of the region, as well as features of news-making about the North Caucasus, in particular, on the federal TV channels. Based on the analysis it were identified three key characteristics of the image of the North Caucasus, broadcasted on federal television channels - a "explosiveness" of the region (terrorist activity), the high concentration of criminal groups and socio-economic disadvantage. The study was performed in the methodology of grounded theory based on the material of expert interviews.
The author focuses on the analysis of linguistic features of students’ presentations as text. Measurements of prosodic parameters such as pitch, intensity, and duration (rate of utterance) were obtained using the computer programs Speech Analyzer 3.0.1 and Pratt (v.4.0.53). The results of these analyses show that students’ presentations are cohesive, coherent and contain TCs, which are characterized by specific prosodic parameters that have a certain effect on the comprehension of these texts, their expressiveness and pragmatic value.
The article offers a discourse analysis of the Runet topical segment, connected with the issue of migration in the Russian Federation. To research this problem we attempted a search of the word “migrant” in the search engine Yandex and interpreted the results along the following lines: types and quantity ratio of the documents in the Internet with the lexeme “migrant”, mapping of geography of migration in the Internet, agencies and organisations dealing with the problems of migration, topics of the documents dealing with the problems of migration. Using micro-analysis, linguistic context of the word “migrant” was investigated, which enabled us to find out the prevailing connotations of this word as a part of its usage in the Internet.
Institutions affect investment decisions, including investments in human capital. Hence institutions are relevant for the allocation of talent. Good market-supporting institutions attract talent to productive value-creating activities, whereas poor ones raise the appeal of rent-seeking. We propose a theoretical model that predicts that more talented individuals are particularly sensitive in their career choices to the quality of institutions, and test these predictions on a sample of around 95 countries of the world. We find a strong positive association between the quality of institutions and graduation of college and university students in science, and an even stronger negative correlation with graduation in law. Our findings are robust to various specifications of empirical models, including smaller samples of former colonies and transition countries. The quality of human capital makes the distinction between educational choices under strong and weak institutions particularly sharp. We show that the allocation of talent is an important link between institutions and growth.
