'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Household environmental management practices, community engagement, and self-reported malaria incidence in urban and rural communities of Malawi
Lungu M. M., Davitadze A., Frontiers in Public Health 2026 Vol. 14 Article 1919768
Malaria control in Malawi relies primarily on long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), but transmission remains heterogeneous across districts. Previous research indicates that community-based environmental management strategies, such as routine drainage maintenance, vegetation removal, and effective household waste disposal, may reduce environmental conditions conducive to malaria vector proliferation. This study investigated the ...

Shishkin S., Almazov A., Vlassov V. et al., Электронный научный журнал "Социальные аспекты здоровья населения" 2026 Т. 72 № 4 Статья 4
Abstract Significance. The epidemiological, clinical, and socioeconomic effects of healthcare digitalization are actively discussed in the scientific literature. Less attention has been paid to changes in the organization of healthcare resulting from the introduction of digital technologies. These changes have not been the subject of specific research. However, digital technologies is becoming a driver for the ...

The use of beta-blockers (BB) plays a crucial role in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, there are significant discrepancies with current guidelines in real-world practice. The main issues related to suboptimal dosing regimens and poor medication adherence reduce the effectiveness of therapy and worsen the prognosis of patients. Under the auspices of the Eurasian ...

Ugleva A. V., Социологическое обозрение 2026 Т. 25 № 3 С. 268–293
This article undertakes a socio-philosophical analysis of a situation in which the place of the Other within the structure of subjective experience is occupied by an algorithmic agent – an entity that simulates understanding yet remains devoid of genuine subjectivity. To investigate this configuration, the author turns to psychiatric practice as a representative case study: ...

Чеботарева О. Е., Пирогов А. А., Antipenko I. et al., Доклады российской академии наук. Науки о жизни 2026 Т. 529 № 1 С. 389–395
Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe obstetric complication caused by chronic placental ischaemia. Genome-wide profiling of microRNA isoforms in two trophoblast hypoxia models (CoCl2 and the oxyquinoline derivative neuradapt, BeWo b30 cells) and clinical PE samples (placental tissue, syncytiotrophoblast vesicles) revealed concordant downregulation of hsa-miR-143-3p isoforms. Under a strict fold-change threshold, the canonical isoform (21 nt) ...

Validation of novel naturalistic limb movement stimuli for studying biological motion perception in adults
Koriakina M., Ntoumanis I., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 Article 1754368
Introduction:  Understanding how we perceive and interpret the movements of other living beings is fundamental to social interaction, survival, and navigating our dynamic environment. Traditional studies of biological motion perception have predominantly employed simplified stimuli, such as point-light displays, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. Methods:  To overcome this limitation, we created a novel stimulus set featuring ...

Bug D. S., Kuzovenkova D. A., Tishkov A. V. et al., Biochemical Genetics 2026
Deciphering the evolutionary history of genes is foundational for biomedical research, enabling the identification of compensatory mutations in disease-associated genes and the selection of evolutionarily relevant model organisms. However, challenges of multi-isoform handling, the presence of incomplete genomes/proteomes initial datasets, and problems of evolutionary history representation are still present. To address these issues, we introduce ...

Zaikin A., Vlasenko D., Zakharov D. et al., Diagnostics 2026 Vol. 16 No. 17 Article 2746
Background/Objectives: Synolitic graphs (SGs) were developed for task-based fMRI, where edge weights encode the discriminative power of pairwise regional features; whether similar information can be recovered from resting-state data was untested. We benchmarked SGs for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) classification using the multisite ABIDE-I dataset (871 subjects: 403 subjects with ASD, 468 typical controls; 17 sites; CC200 atlas). Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality and are among the foremost causes of disability globally. CVD burden has continued to increase in most countries since 1990, with trends driven by changing exposures to harmful risk factors, population growth, and population aging. Objectives: We report estimates of global, national, and subnational CVD burden, including 18 ...

Trias-Llimos S., Cook S., Eggen A. E. et al., International Journal for Equity in Health 2022 Vol. 21 No. 1 Article 51
Socioeconomic inequalities in cardiovascular (CVD) health outcomes are well documented. While Russia has one of the highest levels of CVD mortality in the world, the literature on contemporary socio-economic inequalities in biomarker CVD risk factors is sparse. This paper aims to assess the extent and the direction of SEP inequalities in established physiological CVD risk biomarkers, and to ...

Studying accelerated cardiovascular ageing in Russian adults through a novel deep-learning ECG biomarker
Diez Benavente E., Jimenez-Lopez, F., Attia, Z. I. et al., Wellcome Open Research 2021 Vol. 6 P. 1–12
Background: A non-invasive, easy-to-access marker of accelerated cardiac ageing would provide novel insights into the mechanisms and aetiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as well as contribute to risk stratification of those who have not had a heart or circulatory event. Our hypothesis is that differences between an ECG-predicted and chronologic age of participants (δage) would ...
