The article analyzes modern legislation regarding artificial termination of pregnancy in countries around the world. Depending on the grounds on which abortion is permitted, five groups of countries are distinguished. Estimates have shown that about 60% of women of reproductive age live in countries with liberal legislation, where abortion is allowed at the request of the woman or on broad socio-economic grounds, and 40% of women live in countries that severely restrict the right to terminate a pregnancy. Russian legislation remains liberal; however, recent amendments indicate a shift toward restricting women's reproductive rights.
