The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari, XI с.) continues to attract sustained schol- arly attention worldwide. In Russian Japanese studies, The Tale of Genji has likewise been the subject of numerous academic articles and conference papers. Nevertheless, the question of the work’s influence on Japanese theatrical tradi- tions has not yet received systematic scholarly consideration. This gap is particu- larly notable given that one of the most renowned plays of the Noh theater, Lady Aoi (Aoi no ue), represents a direct adaptation of material from Genji mono- gatari. The chronological scope of the present study encompasses the period of the formation and development of the Noh theater, as determined by the dates of composition of the plays under consideration. The aim of this research is to elucidate the influence of The Tale of Genji on Japanese theater. Employing literary and cultural-historical methods of analysis, the study demonstrates that Noh theater not only adapted narrative motifs and character types from Genji monogatari, but also partially reinterpreted its philosophical concepts through the prism of its own aesthetic system. These findings open new perspectives for further research into the interaction between Japanese literary and theatrical traditions.
