Transposing Political and Regional Identities After Moving to Megalopolises: An Interaction Model (Evidence from Russia)

This article examines young people’s regional and political identities after relocating from four Russian regions to Central Russia’s megalopolises, exploring how these identities interact and how relocation contexts shape this process. Grounded in an interpretivist paradigm and using phenomenological analysis, the study analyses lived experiences through in-depth interviews, resulting in an empirical model of identity interaction. A key finding reveals how regional identity transposition activates political identity in specific contexts. This research contributes to social science by investigating a novel area and revealing mechanisms linking regional and political identities during youth migration. It offers practical implications for migration policy and regional cooperation by enhancing strategies for adapting migrants and strengthening local institutions to foster inclusivity and social integration in new spaces.
