Job apathy in employees: The role of personality traits and perfectionism

Организационная психология. 2025. Vol. 15. No. 2. P. 9–17.
Marina Sheveleva, Zolotareva A.

Apathy is a serious threat to the well-being of employees and organizations, but so far it has been little studied in the job context. The construct of job apathy includes two components: apathetic thoughts and apathetic actions. Apathetic thoughts comprise the lack of interest in and satisfaction from one’s job. Apathetic actions mean the lack of intention to perform well. Employees just do what they must do without putting meaningful effort into fulfilling their tasks. Purpose. The study aims to examine the predictive role of perfectionism and personality traits in job apathy. Method. Three hundred and twenty Russian employees (56.2% females) with mean age of 38.57 years (SD = 9.80) completed the Russian versions of the Job Apathy Scale, Short Almost Perfect Scale, and Short Portrait Big Five Questionnaire. Findings. A series of linear regression models showed that age, extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience were negative predictors, whereas gender and maladaptive perfectionism were positive predictors of job apathetic thoughts. Age, agreeableness, and openness to experience were negative predictors of job apathetic actions. Overall, perfectionism and personality traits partly predicted job apathetic thoughts and actions among Russian employees. Implication in practice. These findings can be used to measure maladaptive perfectionism in the employee selection process, develop coaching and mentoring programs and career counseling, provide support to employees with maladaptive perfectionism and low extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience.

Nikiforova K., Kulikova S., Platonova T. et al., Journal of Modern Foreign Psychology 2026 Vol. 15 No. 3 P. 98–113
The increasing prevalence of technology in daily life has led to a rising demand for IT specialists. In response, educational curricula have been adapted to incorporate coding lessons as early as primary school. However, the cognitive processes underlying computational thinking (CT) — the ability to apply a systematic problem-solving approach akin to computer logic — ...

Monahhova E., Gorodnicheva Y., Morozova A. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 512–527
The rapid proliferation of misinformation in digital environments poses a serious threat to public health, political institutions, and public discourse. Behavioral research has accumulated substantial evidence on why people believe and share false information, yet individual studies address cognitive biases, social factors, or emotional processes largely in isolation. Additionally, the influential integrative frameworks that do ...

Polarization of opinions in the group: a modeling algorithm considering the dynamics of social bonds
Chebotarev V., Andreyuk D., Elizarova Anastasiya et al., Procedia Computer Science 2022 Vol. 213 No. C P. 596–601
The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Ragimova A., Imanaeva M., Nieto Doval C. M. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 P. 1–15
Background: Motor resonance reflects the activation of the motor system during the observation of others’ actions and is considered a physiological marker of the human mirror neuron system (MNS). This study investigated whether the excitatory and inhibitory balance in the primary motor cortex, driven by glutamatergic and GABAergic mechanisms, is linked to the strength of ...

A quantum–analogue formalism for modeling supraliminal information processing
Lubashevsky I., Lubashevskiy V., Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena 2026 Vol. 498 Article 135441
We develop a novel cloud-function formalism describing the dynamical relationship between sensory-information processing in large-scale brain networks (supraliminal processing) and the content of the mental representation of an observed object. The formalism combines elements of neural field theory for large-scale neural activity with the spatial characteristics of perceived objects and their embedding in the environment ...

Эффект категориальной различимости при разных типах загрузки рабочей памяти
Kotov A. A., Зайцева Е.

Stronger right-hemispheric involvement in language processing is associated with greater functional connectivity between the left-lateralized language-related network and the cingulo-opercular network
Karpychev V., Malyutina S., Dragoy O., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 69
Language comprehension and production are predominantly supported by the left-lateralized language-related network (LRN). However, right-hemispheric homologs of the language regions can also contribute to language processing, resulting in reduced left-hemispheric language lateralization. To date, it remains unclear whether less left-hemispheric language lateralization is associated with the recruitment of other non-language networks and their interaction with ...

Self-esteem and self-reported personality traits: When attitudes toward traits make a difference
Shchebetenko S., De Marchis G., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality questionnaires do not directly record recurring conduct. Rather, they elicit task-bounded reports of personality attributions: how respondents characterise themselves using personality-descriptive content. From this perspective, established associations between self-esteem and self-reported personality may depend on the evaluative meaning attached to that content. We tested whether attitudes toward the Big Five traits moderated associations between self-esteem and corresponding personality reports ...

Personality reported: Attributions, dispositional regularities, and the meaning of trait scores
Shchebetenko S., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality psychology owes much of its success to self- and informant reports, commonly used to estimate individual differences in personality. This paper argues that reports are also psychological products: task-bounded expressions of how respondents construe themselves or others in personality terms. The attributional model of personality reporting (AMPR) distinguishes contextually anchored behavioural episodes; dispositional regularities, estimated as ...

Throughout life, individuals face various decisions, necessitating the development of optimal strategies to achieve desired outcomes. However, the mechanisms underlying intertemporal choice, the conflict between immediate and delayed rewards, remain a topic of debate. This pilot study focuses on analyzing impulsivity as a key factor in such decisions, examining it through the lens of personality ...

Modern researchers are increasingly exploring alternative methods for describing personality differences, as traditional language-based self-report measures suffer from numerous limitations, including cultural bias, social desirability effects, measurement inaccuracies, and other issues.
