‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Факторы субъективного одиночества молодежи, пожилых и женщин с маленькими детьми

Журнал исследований социальной политики. 2026. Т. 24. № 2. С. 243–258.
Biryukova S., Kareva D., Stuzhuk D., Амшаринская С. Ю.

This article examines the factors associated with subjective loneliness among young people, older adults, and women with young children in Russia. The study is based on an online survey conducted in 2023, which used a representative sample of Russians aged 20–74 (N=6557). The authors demonstrate that the level of subjective loneliness is statistically significantly higher than the sample average among young people and women with young children, particularly those with children under the age of three, and lower among 60–74 year olds. Logistic regression analysis reveals that factors associated with loneliness vary across the population groups. Among young people, significant factors include personality traits such as agreeableness and neuroticism, life dissatisfaction, and manifestations of depression, anxiety, and social dependence. Among older adults, a higher risk of subjective loneliness is associated with an absence of a partner, infrequent communication with friends and family, and residence in rural areas or urban-type settlements. Conversely, lower risks are associated with non-remote employment and regular physical activity. Among women with young children, subjective loneliness is primarily associated with a lack of social contacts outside the family, unemployment, emotional distress, and subjectively perceived restrictions related to family responsibilities. The authors conclude that the mechanisms underlying subjective loneliness are heterogeneous, and that social support measures and policies aimed at reducing the negative consequences of loneliness should consider the specific characteristics of different population groups.
